Well..maybe because it would be bad ass? I mean cmon dude..he could cut all his trips in half and not be gimped when other people with powers (almost every unique character) just go HAHAHA CLARK YOU CAN’T REACH ME and fly up lol. He gets gg’d so often by that. Besides..he had the ability from way the hell back when Jarrel or however you spell it took over his body to make him hunt for all those silly relic things. So why not yet? It’s been..like 6 years since then.

The JL has been together for awhile and in fact Chloe acted as the Watchtower in a previous episode already (but just temporarily that time).
Now she has officially joined the team, but sadly they do not do anything else with it really (other then using it as explinations for things) for the rest of the season.
When I saw this episode the first time I was sooooo ready for some serious JLA action. I figured for sure that was going to be coming up in the next few episodes.
Sadly……there is no JLA action for the entire season. The most you see of the JLA is the pictures in this episode (and oliver/GA of course).
If you go to any of the websites that list the cast for tv shows you can see that none of the JLA actors are in any of the remaining shows, no Kara and no Lana either.
I think they are doing this on purpose though since the show is “smallville” not “The Justice League of America”. If they have the whole team get together it would detract from the main plot.
Quick spoilers (to identify some of what happened in this episode).
The legend about the book was that it would be the bringer of death if it was used. In this case it is true even though Zantana does not actually end up using the book for evil (or sacrificing herself even). The reason the book brings so much death is because in order to get the book Zantana granted a wish to Oliver. Olivers wish has drastic conseqences and therefore, the book is directly responsible for alot of deaths.
One thing I do not understand though is why Olivers wish does not go poof after he no longer wishes he had made it (like Chloe turning back to Chloe and Clark remembering his super powers). Oliver has plenty of reason to regret his wish later on, yet it never reverts to the way things were before he made it.

I haven’t seen him really need to fly, so much, but I think he’s a better character without the ability to fly.
Flaws make the character more interesting, in my opinion. Personally, I generally think Superman has to be the most boring Superhero because he’s too powerful. I think Smallville has done a good job of keeping Clark grounded (heh heh) and thus more interesting.
Superman is potentially a stand-in for God (just watch “Superman Returns” – he flies above the earth and hears the prayers – in a manner of speaking – of the world that needs him as their savior).
When you’ve got a character that’s so powerful that he can be at ground zero of a nuclear implosion, and walk away saying “tee hee – that tickled”, I have to wonder what in Krypton’s name you’re going to come up with to give Superman a challenge. After all, if Superman isn’t challenged somehow, it’s going to be a boring story.
How do you ensure that Clark is challenged? You ensure that he’s challenged by giving him limits. Some of them are of his own making (ie: the fact that he refuses to kill his enemies even though he clearly has the power to do so), some of them are because of what he is (ie: the various forms of kryptonite), some are because he simply hasn’t fully realized his full potential yet (he can’t fly), and some are societal constraints (ie: people knowing that Clark Kent is an alien from outer space turns ugly).
CK needs limits in order to remain interesting. Being all powerful quickly turns into being all boring.

I disagree with your assessment of the “filler” episodes. Stuff is happening in them. Clark’s development is not just about superpowers. His character is developing.
He’s nervous about starting a romantic relationship with Lois because he got burned by his Lana experience. That makes him less alien and more human…and easier for people to relate to. Now, Chloe is prodding him to do what the fans here have been wanting to prod him here to do: get back up, dust himself off, and try again.
That’s not filler – that’s character development…and thus adding to the overall storyline: the Lois & Clark storyline.
Chloe is also apparently taking a step in a new direction: taking a more active role in Oliver’s Legion. That’s adding to the overall storyline, too.
We all know what Clark’s destination is. Clark Kent will be Superman. The whole idea behind this show seems to me to be to show us the journey. I think they’re doing a good job.

Another thing this episode did was to show Clark once again getting past the “I sure wish I was just an ordinary guy…” bit.
I agree with both of you – In this current season, every episode seems to be a “filler”. Every single possible storyline is being used…I really wish the directors would change something up. I really don’t want to see Smallville go, I’ve been with it since the beginning, but it’s starting to get just a little boring. Although there def. is some good stuff going on – Lois and Clark’s budding romance, the character developing of all the characters, Davis Bloome’s dark secret, etc…SOMETHING drastic needs to change for Smallville to continue. I don’t want to see the end of it!! But I agree…we’re already on the 8th season..how many seasons do the average tv show have??
amen to that! smallville has progressivly come to its teenage years, still has adulthood and middle ages to come.. i dont think these are filler episodes as some have suggested, true fans, desire any kind of true story line that makes you fall in love with the character more and more, and this episode just goes to show that. Everyone has seen Clark Kent without glasses since day one, including his arch enemy, Lex Luthor.
Granted, the glasses were always a pretty lame disguise, but how they can make it a believable disguise now, with everybody seeing Clark without glasses for so long, that’s pretty unclear to me, unless they want to go the magic route. For example, maybe Zantana could give him magic glasses, or cast a powerful spell so that everyone thinks Clark has always worn glasses or something. Personally, I think that would be a pretty lame way to do it – akin to the writers saying “We know it’s not believable, so we’re saying that it works – because we say so.”
Personally, I think it would make more sense to have the Superman in this universe wear a mask of some sort.
Why does he need a mask when he can move “faster than a speeding bullet”. He could just remain the “red and blue blur”.
Sumerman CAN’T wear a mask. The whole point of him is unlike any other hero. He’s the face of justice and truth etc etc etc. With a mask on he’d just be… Batman? Lol.

Don’t forget the episode in which Clark went to when Lex was president.! the other ‘Lois’ gave him her press pass AND he wore glasses as the disguise.
Rumour has it, there are only going to be 9 seasons of Smallville, (once again RUMOR, i can’t confirm this!!) and in that time, Chloe has to be killed off – (remember Legion episode, no mention of Chloe in history) Lex has to return, and he has to learn to fly….correct me if im wrong, but we got some good stuff / plotlines on the way!!
P.S. is it true a young Bruce Wayne, will be guest staring next season to further add in a DC twist??

its not his choice….its the directors agreement. if he learned to fly, and got his suit and stuff, then the whole things would be over and they would have to cut it off, otherwise it would just be like making a superman movie -.- been there. done that.

I find some of the critiques here amusing – this one is a case in point. Swatic says they shifted from the original storyline. Go to wikipedia. Look up Superman.
Superman has been around since 1938. There have been many different writers and artists telling Superman stories. Even the origin story changed a little bit over the years. Superman is 71 years old. There is no objective reality to adhere to.
Take flying, for example. In the first comics, Superman could not fly. His super strength (they compared him to a grasshopper) allowed him to jump 1/8 of a mile. He’s shown hanging off of window ledges to listen in on criminals, because he did not have the ability to hover outside their windows.
Superman used to be introduced as being able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. This would not make sense for a character who could simply fly over the stupid thing.
You know why Superman started to fly rather than jump? Animators. When Superman came to television, the animators asked if they could draw him flying rather than jumping. Drawing Superman in flight (show some clouds go past…) is a lot easier than drawing him hopping all over the place (drawing a bunch of buildings at different heights…).
You know why Superman has kryptonite as a weakness? When it was a radio show, the guy portraying Superman needed a break…so they came up with the idea of kryptonite to take the Man of Steel out of the show for a little bit.
The writers of Smallville are just doing what people have done for 71 years: trying to tell entertaining stories about Superman, and using their own imaginations to put their own mark on it…that’s how creativity works.
Rather than whine about him not flying, and not wearing the suit…I say sit back, relax, and enjoy the show for what it is. If it ultimately doesn’t match up with the movies or the recent comic books…so what? They’re creating new stories…so enjoy.

I don’t know that she’s officially part of the JL, but it looks like she’s an ally…sort of “I won’t attend your meetings, but if you need me…”
In other words, just as Battlestar Galactica had a “re-imagined” series which diverted from the original, but was still a darn good story, this could be considered a re-imagined Superman.
I like what they’ve done, because the traditional Superman is too powerful. It is possible for a character to be so powerful that he’s boring.
If bad guys with guns are up to no good, the traditional Superman can show up, roll his eyes about the guns, use heat vision to heat the guns to the point where they have to be dropped, use superspeed to take them out of the bad guys hands, tie a street light’s pole around them, take a bow, and fly off.
Smallville Clark has to think about what he’s going to do. “How am I going to do this without exposing my secret?” That adds a little more drama, even if there are no witnesses that Clark knows about. One random guy with a cell phone camera taking video of him using super strength, and he’s got a problem. If the same guy took a video of Superman doing that, it would just be good publicity rather than a problem.
Personally, I like the idea of a scaled back Superman. Personally, I’d like them to get rid of flight, x-ray vision, and heat vision. Super strength and super-perception should be enough for anyone. (Superman’s breath could just be a manifestation of super-strength: powerful lungs). I’d like invulnerability to be scaled back to the original toughness he had in the 1938 comic too…where bullets were no threat, but an explosive mortar shell could kill.
I know the idea of a nerfed Superman is probably anathema to a lot of people, but I think he’d be a more interesting character than the character than can walk away from a nuclear blast. God-in-tights is boring.

He wouldn’t be Batman, he’d be Superman with a mask.
It would clearly be unorthodox, and Clark has already said he doesn’t want to, so it’s not likely to happen.
However, since there has only been one episode where Clark wore glasses, it would be rather strange for the glasses disguise to work now.
He’d show up, in theory, in his Superman outfit, and the jig would be up. Lex, Tess, Lois, Jimmy, Davis and countless others would all say to themselves, “Hey, I know that guy! That’s Clark Kent! He started wearing glasses this week, but that’s Clark Kent!” We all saw how well that scenario played out. At first there was hero worship, then people got paranoid, thinking he was a scout for an alien invasion…
If they want Superman’s traditional disguise to work, they’re going to have to come up with a darn good explanation. The only thing I can think of is a magic explanation, but I’m hoping that they don’t go that route. Using magic like that is a cheap way for the writers to say “It works because we says so. We don’t need no stinking logic.”

They do become a couple in the movies, he actually gives up his powers so they can live a normal life but he has to get them back because of General Zod. (played by Terrance Stamp whom is playing Jor-El in Smallville.. LOL.. kinda wierd. Also note Clark’s mom in Smallville played Lana Lang in the Movie as well.

It seemed like a recycled movie to me. Although the graphics in Superman Returns was epic, the fact that he was fighting Lex Luthor wasn’t much of a good recipe for UBER fighting action.

i think that they should have made clark superman by now because he’s now supposed to be 23-24, in the comics he became superman at about 23-24, he was superboy (who wore the superman costume) from about 16-23.
brainiac did on Zod’s behalf, basically krypton was breaking up naturally but (in his early days) jor-el created a device which held the planet together using the same crystal/ice stucture the fortress is made of, this device was kept in kandoor (kryptons capital city). Brainiac created a shrinking device and shrunk the entire city of kandoor and put it in a glass bottle (therefore removing the device needed to keep krypton together) without the device krypton broke apart and was destroyed. In his later years superman manages to return kandoor and all its inhabitants back to full size and together they build a new planet underneath it called “new krypton”, hope that clears some stuff up for you.
